Park Slope’s highly educated demographic, eclectic eateries, independent boutiques and cooperative food markets add to its progressive yet vintage charm. This family-oriented, commuter-friendly neighborhood is replete with highly rated schools and access to public transportation.
A family-friendly atmosphere with top-notch schools
Park Slope’s concentration of highly rated schools within walking distance attracts families to the neighborhood. The illustrious list includes:
- P.S. 118 The Maurice Sendak Community School, which focuses on intellectual development over test scores
- P.S. 321 William Penn, which is known for academic excellence and diversity
- M.S. 51 William Alexander Middle School, which has a three-year arts program
- Millennium Brooklyn High School, which has a project-based curriculum
- The Berkeley Carroll School, which is a pre-K through 12th grade private school
Park Slope has a family-oriented atmosphere beyond its schools. During the annual Park Slope Halloween Parade, local store owners dress up and hand out candy, shutting down much of 7th Avenue. “We have a wholesome, Sesame Street-like lifestyle here,” says Jessica Buchman, a local resident and broker at Corcoran Group. “Things move a bit slower. People sit on their stoops and interact with their neighbors.”

“Park Slope has been a classical, established neighborhood for many decades and generations,” says Michael Bethoney, a broker with Nest Seekers International and former Park Slope resident. It’s defined by tranquil streets lined with leafy trees and wide sidewalks. Late 19th-century brownstones are the norm on side streets and come in a wide variety of architectural styles: Italianate, French Second Empire, Greek Revival, Queen Anne and Romanesque Revival. Prewar co-ops are also common in the area, and there are a few stately mansions. A recent crop of modern high-rise condo towers line 4th Avenue. “These buildings are great for homeowners that want the brownstone Brooklyn experience but with easy, uncomplicated high-rise living,” Buchman says. Home prices generally fall within the following ranges, depending on factors like size and conditions:
- Co-ops between the lower $200,000s and $3.4 million
- Condos between the mid-$600,000s and $3.9 million
- Multifamily homes between $1.6 million and $6.6 million
- Single-family homes between $4.1 million and $7.9 million
However, this is a renter-friendly neighborhood, as over half of properties in Park Slope are apartments.
Walking to 526-acre Prospect Park is a main perk
Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s primary green space, and its proximity to Park Slope is one of the neighborhood’s main draws. It was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, two renowned landscape architects of the 19th century. “Olmsted designed Central Park and felt it was a failure,” Bethoney says. “He saw Prospect Park as his second opportunity and crown jewel. You can spend a lot of time walking through it and never see all its special little corners.” Prospect Park is a beloved community space for a summertime splash at the dog beach, an autumn day at the zoo, ice skating in the winter or a springtime picnic. Sprawling open spaces give way to hilly woodland pathways and meandering lakes. Baseball fields, tennis courts and playgrounds are encircled by a car-free road dedicated to joggers and cyclists. The adjacent Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Public Library are nearby cultural attractions that provide additional leisure activities. Homes on the western edge of the neighborhood may be closer to Washington Park, which is home to popular basketball courts, a dog run and a Sunday farmers market.
Subway links to Manhattan and rail service to Long Island
Park Slope offers excellent access to public transit, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and multiple bike lanes. MTA buses stop frequently along 5th and 7th Avenues. Multiple subway stations along 9th Street, 4th Avenue and Flatbush Avenue keep commuters well-connected. The Atlantic Terminal sits at the northernmost point of Park Slope; from here, the Long Island Rail Roadtakes passengers east. Drivers can get to Manhattan’s Financial District, 6 miles away, via Interstate 478 in half an hour, a timeframe that accounts for moderate traffic. Allow roughly 15 to 30 minutes for the commute to Manhattan via subway, depending on your destination.
Nightlife, cosmopolitan dining and local produce
The neighborhood’s main commercial arteries are 5th and 7th Avenues, where you can peruse an endless offering of independent restaurants and boutiques. Seventh Avenue is known for its long-standing local businesses, and 5th Avenue has a slightly more eclectic feel with its hip bars and trendy bistros. Bangkok Degree is among a slew of popular Thai spots, and The Gate is one of the area’s most popular bars. The upscale Al di là Trattoria reflects the neighborhood’s early Italian American heritage. Grocery shoppers can head to Union Market or the members-run Park Slope Food Coop, which stocks local, organic produce. On most Saturdays since 1989, locals have flocked to the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket; as the second largest farmer’s market in New York City, the weekly event welcomes diverse vendors from throughout the tri-state area.
How Park Slope compares to surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods
When most people think of historic brownstone Brooklyn, Park Slope is at the top of the list, although a few other neighborhoods may come to mind. When compared to Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill, Park Slope covers more space and has more variety of homes. Neighboring Gowanus on the other side of 4th Avenue has a more up-and-coming, artsy feel. Nearby Carroll Gardens offers a similar atmosphere to Park Slope farther from Prospect Park. Neighboring Prospect Heights is also comparable, although it’s more in the heart of the action with Atlantic Avenue and the Barclays Center.
