Most homes in Canarsie come with private parking, either in driveways or backyard garages. The neighborhood features flat brick facades, wooden frames with vinyl siding and some brick bungalows. A majority of homes in the neighborhood were built in the 1960s. “A lot of the homes in the neighborhood are quite a bit younger than other parts of Brooklyn,” says real estate agent Mitchell Feldman of Pride Estates, who was born and raised in Canarsie. “The layout is more conducive to the way people want to live in this day and age, with big bedrooms and lots of closets.” The price point is another major factor, says Chris Cavorti, a real estate agent with 17 years of experience in the New York City area, who adds, “And because of the zoning, you’re restricted on height, which really keeps the suburban feel.” Pricing typically breaks down like this:
Dining and shopping in Canarsie are centered on Rockaway Parkway and Flatlands Avenue. Local restaurants showcase Caribbean, Haitian and Jamaican cuisines, offering meat dishes, fried fish and beef patties. Near the pier, you'll find more eateries, gas stations and an Ideal supermarket at Parkway Plaza. Canarsie Plaza mall inland features a BJ’s Wholesale Club for bulk groceries.
Canarsie is served by New York City Geographic District #18, offering families a range of public school options across all grade levels. Local elementary schools such as P.S. 114 and P.S. 115 are among the public choices available to residents. The neighborhood is also home to several highly rated private and charter schools, providing diverse educational opportunities for students.
Canarsie Park spans 132 acres and is home to baseball diamonds, cricket fields and a skatepark. Since 2021, the park has hosted an annual Caribbean Heritage and Juneteenth Festival with vibrant costumes and stilt dancers. Yacht, canoe clubs and kayak launches along Paerdegat Basin make the most of Jamaica Bay’s shoreline. Canarsie Pier is a popular fishing spot, Feldman says: “Depending on the season, you can get porgies, snapper and flounder.” Additionally, while the Fresh Creek Nature Preserve is largely inaccessible to the public, its shores are popular for birdwatching.
Although subway service in Canarsie is limited to the L train—which makes its final stop at the neighborhood’s northern edge—residents enjoy a variety of transportation options. Multiple bus routes weave through Canarsie, offering convenient connections to other parts of Brooklyn and direct links into Manhattan. For drivers, the Belt Parkway entrance near Canarsie Pier provides quick access to JFK Airport and Long Island, making travel by car seamless.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency reports that more than 10,000 residential buildings in Canarsie face a 1% annual risk of flooding. To mitigate these risks, the city constructed Tidal Gates in Fresh Creek during 2021 and 2022. Additionally, the New York City Department of City Planning notes that Canarsie Park provides residents with protection from significant wave exposure. Nonetheless, homeowners may continue to experience the impact of rising insurance premiums. “For any mortgage in a flood zone, you’ll be required to have flood insurance,” Cavorti says. “It’s absolutely an added expense.”
